The Britannia Hotel was created in order
to provide quality service to the tourist in Costa Rica in
search of personalized, professional service with an emphasis/focus
on the individual needs of each guest. Its name reflects an
elegant, classical, distinguished atmosphere which is evident
in all facets of service, rooms, restaurant and common areas,
such as the main lobby and the conference room.
We are aware of the demands and necessities
of the modern day traveler. A traveler that every day finds
himself with more access to more tourist destinations, and
that ultimately quality service is what will determine which
destination he/she will choose. The Britannia Hotel opens
its doors to the visitor without losing sight of Costa Rican
hospitality.
High ceilings, original walls made of thick brick, arches
and stained glass windows letting in colorful light all aid
in creating the hotel's warm Victorian atmosphere. Beautiful
wallpaper, fine rugs, ceiling fans, mosaic tile floors and
English style furniture contrast sharply with the tropical
flower gardens "a la tica".
The Britannia Hotel is divided into two parts;
one is the old house which houses five Deluxe Rooms and five
Jr. Suites, as well as the restaurant which occupies what
was once the old wine cellar of the house, appropriately named
"The Cellar". The new part of the hotel consists
of a four-story addition housing 14 standard rooms all of
which have T.V. with cable, telephone, private bathroom with
bathtub, hot water, safe deposit box and either one king size
bed or two beds. The Deluxe and Jr. Suite rooms have, in addition
to all of the items stated for the standard rooms, a desk,
a hair dryer in the bathroom and either one king size bed
or two queen size beds.
The Britannia Hotel is situated in the heart of Barrio Amón,
a zone possessing great architectural beauty due to the fact
that it was the home to much of San José's high class.
The hotel is centrally located 25 minutes from the international
airport and just six blocks from downtown San José,
so as to be close to the many tourist attractions, banks,
post office, transport services and the best nightlife spots
that San José has to offer. San José, Costa
Rica, Calle 3 and Avenida 11, Barrio Amón.
The original house was built in 1910 by a
wealthy Spanish emigrant coffee baron Cipriano Herrero del
Peral. The house was constructed using imported materials
from Europe and under the direction of the architect Jaime
Carranza, one of the best known and prestigious architects
around the turn of the century. In 1992 the idea arose to
transform the house into a unique hotel, due both to the architectural
beauty of the building and to the historic value of the house,
named a National Landmark by the Minister of Culture.
In 1993, renovation and remodeling of the
house was begun by the construction company "Van der
Laat and Jiménez", the actual owners of the hotel.
Finally on August 26, 1993 the hotel opened its doors to the
public and held its inauguration.
